Glen Dessary The ideal shooting lodge for a holiday getaway. In the Highlands of Scotland, with stalking and many other activites Glendessary Estate shooting lodge holiday letting is a 15,000 acre deer forest of the highest calibre. Located in the famous Knoydart region – the last great European wilderness – this wild expanse of land stretches from the western end of Loch Arkaig to the sea at Loch Nevis, and climbs a staggering 3,000ft to its six tallest peaks. Gleann a'Deas Airidh> When Charles Edward Stuart raised the Jacobite standard at Glenfinnan in August 1745 to herald his arrival in Scotland, he was apprehensive of sufficient support. His fears were famously allayed with the appearance of the men of Clan Cameron – appearing over the ridge, weary from their long march through the towering peaks of Glen Dessary. Following his disastrous defeat at Culloden, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’ fled under cover. Prior to his meeting with the legendary Flora MacDonald of Skye, and subsequent final farewell to Scotland, he is reputed to have abandoned his remaining campaign wealth on the difficult hillsides of the Knoydart region – perhaps, it is said, towards the western end of Glen Dessary Estate. A ruin by the side of the track near the entrance to the estate is what remains of a small Hanoverian Barracks where a garrison was stationed after the 1745 Jacobite Uprising.
Accommodation Comfortably sleeping 14, all but one of the bedrooms has its own bathroom, and each has a distinctive character. The large kitchen has a gas cooker and Esse range, fridge, freezer and dishwasher, and adjoins the baronial dining room: this in turn is separated from the drawing room by a chimney-column with fires on either side. A drying-room ensures your kit is never damp in the morning, and the utility room has a washing-machine and dryer. A larger party requiring further accommodation may wish to make use of the charming bothy – situated 400 yards below the lodge and sleeping four, complete with kitchen and sitting-room. more Accommodation is let by the week, Sunday pm to Sunday am. Children are most welcome, but we regret we cannot allow pets in the lodge. Gundogs can be housed in kennels close by. A cook can be arranged if requested. All towels and bedlinen are provided, and the lodge is thoroughly cleaned before each party arrives. Due to the remoteness of the estate, it has not been possible to install a landline. It is not possible to receive a mobile signal in the lodge, though a short walk puts one within range. There is a satellite telephone system, to be used only in emergency.
Red Deer Stalking Glen Dessary is carefully managed to ensure the excellence of its red deer stalking. The owner Sir Patrick Grant collaborates with an association of neighbouring estates to ensure the best possible management of the local deer population. Glen Dessary offers one of the most exciting stalking experiences available: it’s not uncommon to shoot a stag at 3,000 feet, or to climb through mist that suddenly lifts to reveal Skye and Rhum to the West. The estate’s experienced stalker accompanies guests on expeditions, and will endeavour to ensure an enjoyable day. The stag season runs from July to October, and the hind season from October to February. Activities With 15,000 acres at your disposal the opportunities to explore and to appreciate the spectacular scenery are endless: there are also several ‘Munros’ to conquer (mountains over 3,000ft). Fishing rights are available with the lodge rental: the chance to casta line over the estate's two beautiful rivers, and to take a boat out on the famous Loch Arkaig. Additionally a boat trip to Inverie and various other activites can be arranged. Wildlife The estate is situated in one of the most remote areas of the UK and abounds in varied wildlife. Golden eagles soar above ptarmigan, black grouse and woodcock. Frequent herds of red deer can be as great as 100-H2. In the interests of diversity Highland Cattle and Iron Age Pigs have been introduced to the estate, and are farmed within expansive enclosures. Holiday Letting Glen Dessary is a perfect holiday destination for those simply wishing to get away from it all. Remote, wild and beautiful, this great expanse of mountainous land affords a great sense of freedom and relaxation. You don’t have to be a deer stalker to enjoy the estate!
